There are many different types of Hemichromis species but they all look a bit similar in color, shape, and size. Hemichromis species vary somewhat in size, intensity of coloration, and detail. The Hemichromis species seem to be the most common in the hobby which is easy to understand given their beautiful colors and strict personalities.

Hemichromis species, which has a almost beige with chin, throat, and parts of the lower belly being slightly lighter. During periods of courtship and spawning will these parts become a fire-red in the male and many rows of small metallic silvery blue spots on the face and sides. Hemichromis species come from central and western Africa, they reach about 4 - 6 inches in length. Females however are smaller in size than males. Hemichromis species are noted as among the best and most faithful cichlid parents.
